Songfestival winners Lordi must be an exception to something we could easily call ‘The Finnish Law’. A bunch of good looking guys, preferably wearing black hairdo’s and black eyeliner, which score hits all over the planet and warm the hearts of thousands of girls with their gloomy goth rock. To illustrate the story: think of HIM, The 69 Eyes, Negative, and The Rasmus for example and you’ll know what I mean. Fresh name in this genre is SaraLee, again a group op pretty boys playing the well-known Finnish goth rock, sometimes referred to as goth ‘n roll. Their debut single ‘Dance’ did pretty well in their home country, now it’s time to step into the spotlight with debut album ‘Darkness Between’. First track ‘Everytime’ is awesome; it’s starts heavy and fast which grabs the interest of the listener immediately. The song sound surprisingly fresh, and is well composed. Singer Joonas has a great voice, which fills up the music very well. ‘Dance’, the band’s debut single, indeed shows a song that would do well in the charts; it will be stuck in your head ever since the first listening. Actually all the songs have that power, just listen to ‘Black and Hollow’, ‘Destination Unknown’ and ‘My Sweet Craving’. Song after song SaraLee knows to surprise me with their high quality tracks that despite of their many similarities with other bands do have their own sound. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, the band knows to surprise you again with a big surprise. Last track ‘Like Dreamers’ is a well kept secret, and the absolute highlight of the album. SaraLee changes their sound from goth ‘n roll into doom, and fill your ears with eight minutes of perfection. You better keep an eye on SaraLee in the future; this band is going to be big! A debut like this promises a lot of good things for the future. ‘Darkness Between’ is a recommendation for every goth rock lover, and a must-buy for HIM fans.
